Second Thoughts

By  Philani Tyson Nombika, South Africa:

I have sleepless nights because I try to sleep less at night because every night feels like the memories you scratched into my back

That I can’t go back to

Every night every heartbeat beating itself up against these scars

Because we are dancers to music composed by failed love attempts

Out of tune singers to our happiness

We are broken music boxes with only one gear working

Ticking time fleeting

Broken

Sometimes we feel hail storms brewing in our lungs but breathe fire

Because we forging metal blades in the form of tongues

Our tongues have to learn restraint

Our Hearts need to learn the song of cage birds
